No se encontró registro del ingreso administrativo del fondo al ABHPS. Sin embargo, en el Fondo Ministerio de Gobierno ex fondo copiadores, subfondo Archivo General de la Provincial, serie notas, se encuentran notas referidas al traspaso de los protocolos a esa oficina a partir de 1896. Los protocolos notariales entre 1960 y 1980 se encuentran en el Archivo Central del Poder Ejecutivo y los posteriores a 1980 hasta la actualidad en el archivo sectorial del Colegio de Escribanos de la Provincia.

El fondo está compuesto por los protocolos notariales producidos por los escribanos de número que ejercieron en el ámbito de la Provincia. Esta documentación ofrece una información muy abundante sobre las actividades de las épocas a que se refiera, tanto desde la perspectiva cualitativa como cuantitativa, y en cuanto a la cantidad y calidad de esa información. Es uno de los fondos documentales más importantes del ABHS en cuanto a su extensión en el tiempo y la información que contiene. El protocolo notarial es la colección anual de los matrices autorizados por un notario (escrituras públicas y actas notariales). Los matrices son los originales de una escritura o acta que el notario conserva en el protocolo y del cual se extraen todas las copias. Se presenta en volúmenes encuadernados y foliados. El protocolo notarial es propiedad del Estado. El notario es su custodio. Una escritura pública es el documento público notarial en la que se recoge negocios jurídicos, mientras en un el acta notarial, se recogen actos y hechos jurídicos. La escritura es por definición, un documento notarial. No hay escritura pública de otro fedetario. También por definición, la escritura es un documento público. Son negocios jurídicos y por lo tanto se recogen en escritura: la compraventa, la herencia, la hipoteca, las capitulaciones matrimoniales, la emancipación o la constitución de una sociedad. Algunos negocios no se inscriben en registro alguno, como por ejemplo el otorgamiento de un poder, negocio unilateral o el reconocimiento de deuda, que es bilateral. Son actos jurídicos y se recogen en acta notarial la constancia de hechos o manifestaciones de comparencia.
