1990 - 2020
"Record the dates of existence of the entity being described. For corporate bodies include the date of establishment/foundation/enabling legislation and dissolution. For persons include the dates or approximate dates of birth and death or, when these dates are not known, floruit dates. Where parallel systems of dating are used, equivalences may be recorded according to relevant conventions or rules. Specify in the Rules and/or conventions element (5.4.3) the system(s) of dating used, e.g. ISO 8601." (ISAAR 5.2.1)
No obstante su creación formal data del año 1990 los orígenes de la Fundación Maíz, de sus actividades y objetivos se remontan al año 1974, cuando en la ciudad de Buenos Aires Carlos Nadal y Lía Comitini fundan la Galería Tiwanaku (1974 – 1987). La misma se creó con el fin de adquirir, recopilar y difundir el arte popular iberoamericano y sus manifestaciones patrimoniales, brindando especial apoyo y lugar para artesanos de Argentina y América Latina, con la intención de visibilizar, comercializar y expandir sus producciones (A nivel nacional e internacional). Por otro lado también se organizaban diversas exposiciones, talleres, actividades, conferencias, proyecciones y debates sobre la multitemática iberoamericana. En la década del ochenta el matrimonio y sus hijos se trasladan a Salta. A mediados de 1985, inspirados en el proyecto de la Galería Tiwanaku, fundan en la ciudad de Cafayate el Museo de Arte Popular Iberoamericano, institución de carácter privado que perseguía, e incluía los fines del proyecto Galería Tiwanacu, ampliando a su vez las redes de trabajo y articulación con organismos y entidades nacionales e internacionales, de carácter público y privado. A mediados de ese mismo año, la familia Nadal Comitini se traslada a Salta capital y re abren el Museo y la Galería en una nueva sede ubicada en Caseros 472 y 476. El 17 de diciembre de 1990 la Fundación Maíz obtuvo su personería jurídica. A partir de ese momento se concentraron en dicha entidad todas las actividades, el patrimonio y los proyectos de Nadal y Comitini. Las iniciativas, articulaciones y funciones de la Fundación fueron múltiples y diversas. Sus actividades abarcaron la organización y participación en: exposiciones, capacitaciones, conferencias, creación de M.U.Sa (Museos Unidos de Salta), homenajes, publicaciones, encuentros y ciclos, desfiles, proyecciones, ferias, concursos, etc. Y fue sede del Centro de Voluntario de Salta. La actividad realizada por el Museo de Arte Popular Iberoamericano y la posterior Fundación Maíz fue declarada de interés cultural por autoridades municipales, provinciales, nacionales e internacionales. En 1996 se re configura el Museo y pasa a denominarse Museo “Obras del Espíritu”. El mismo estuvo integrado principalmente por las colecciones de artesanías “Palomas” y “Nacimientos”, que formaban parte del patrimonio de la Fundación Maíz, y montaba sus muestras de manera itinerante sin contar con una sede fija para su funcionamiento. Carlos Nadal falleció en el año 2009, su esposa Lía Comitini continuó desarrollando diversas actividades y proyectos. En el año 2020 el Consejo de Administración decidió disolver la Fundación Maíz, y en setiembre de 2023 el patrimonio del Museo Obras del espíritu fue donado al Complejo Cultural San Francisco.
