La colección de discos y casetes de JHM forma parte de un conjunto mayor de materiales que fueron donados a la Biblioteca Provincial luego del fallecimiento del Sr. Meyer. Hernández Meyer era coleccionista y estaba a cargo de un puesto de venta y canje de libros, casetes y discos en la vía pública, situado en la intersección de las calles Ameghino y Zuviría. Se cree que algunos documentos fueron adquiridos por compra, otros probablemente le fueron cedidos, pero se desconoce la historia previa al ingreso al Archivo Histórico.

Donación realizada al Complejo de Bibliotecas y Archivo de Salta por apoderado del Ingeniero José Hernández Meyer en el mes de Setiembre del año 2017 luego del fallecimiento del Sr. Hernández Meyer. La Subsecretaría de Espacios Públicos de la Municipalidad de la Ciudad contactó a la Biblioteca Provincial para que sea receptores de la donación.

Colección de grabaciones sonoras musicales y no musicales que pertenecieran al Sr. Hernández Meyer. La misma incluye archivos diversos, realizados con diferentes modos de grabación, ya sean comerciales o no, y está conformada por diferentes tipos de materiales y soportes. Los Discos y Casetes de carácter musical reflejan diferentes décadas, estilos, artistas y sellos. Se trata de una colección que registra también en soporte casete un periodo breve que hace a la historia de la radiofonía salteña ya que está integrada por grabaciones que pertenecieron a Isidoro Rolando, ex director de LR4 Radio Nacional Salta durante los primeros años de la década del noventa, que fueron realizadas entre mediados de la década del ochenta y los años dos mil. Se pueden encontrar fragmentos y ensayos de radioteatros como “Adiós a las armas”, “Cumbres borrascosas” y “La fiera acorralada”; grabaciones de programas varios como Butaca Reservada, Pasemos revista, Bienvenidos a bordo; entrevistas (Ricardo Castro) y publicidades; registros de voces de locutoras y locutores que marcaron una etapa en Radio Nacional Salta como Venancio López, Elio Lafuente, Julia Echazú, el propio Isidoro Rolando, etc. Y también pueden encontrarse grabaciones de eventos en vivo, presentaciones, y espectáculos como por ejemplo “Por la tierra y el cielo” con recitados de poesías a cargo de Mercedes Saravia, Raquel Escudero, etc. Y música en vivo interpretada por Isidro Sánchez y Daniel Tinte. Dos de las unidades documentales registran testimonios sobre la historia de La Quiaca y alrededores, en la provincia de Jujuy.

Una parte de los materiales que contenía la donación se encontraba en muy mal estado de conservación debido a la forma de guarda y el grado de exposición a diferentes agentes perjudiciales. Dichos documentos fueron separados en otro espacio físico y detallados en un registro diferenciado. Un tiempo después éste conjunto de materiales fueron donados al Sr. Gastón Mendieta en Agosto de 2018 quien está cargo del proyecto de creación del Centro Cultural José Hernández Meyer. Se digitalizaron algunos soportes casetes debido a su delicado estado de conservación, con fines de preservación.

Los materiales no presentaban un indicio que permitan rastrear un principio de orden original. A partir de datos recabados se pudo interpretar que los materiales, cuando estaban en manos del Sr. Hernández Meyer, se ubicaban en cajones sin un criterio muy específico de guarda. La colección se encuentra instalada en sala según el criterio de soporte y tamaño. Es por esto que los discos de vinilo simples y extendidos, de 7", se encuentran en el mobiliario que agrupa a este tipo de discos, y lo mismo ocurre con los Long Play´s y los discos de pasta, en los tres casos fueron acomodados según orden alfabético de los apellidos o seudónimos de el/los intérprete/s. Los cassettes están ubicados en una caja y ordenados según el mismo criterio que los discos. Se prevé a su vez separar los documentos según la procedencia del o los intérprete/s.

El acceso es abierto, ajustado a la normativa interna del Archivo Histórico según Carta de Servicios. Sin restricciones. Al no contar con copias digitales de consulta el acceso a la documentación original se encuentra restringida por cuestiones de orden práctico. Aquellos documentos que no se encuentren disponibles en soportes digitales y/o disponibles para su acceso a través de la consulta remota pueden ser accedidos presencialmente en la sede de la Mediateca.

La mayor parte de los registros albergados en cassette no presenta restricciones para su consulta. En el caso de los discos Long Play, que contienen grabaciones de música editada, se encuentran protegidos por la ley de derechos de propiedad intelectual.

Dentro de la serie de los discos es importante tener en cuenta las diferentes velocidades y materiales para hacer un uso correcto de los reproductores y no dañar ni la unidad ni el equipo. La colección cuenta con discos de 33, 45 y 78 rpm, de pasta o vinilo según el caso. En general todos los materiales que componen esta colección se encuentran en estado de conservación regular.

La colección de discos de Hernández Meyer fue traída al complejo de archivos y bibliotecas como parte de un fondo mayor que incluía una gran cantidad de materiales bibliográficos. Algunos de los documentos que formaban parte de la colección audiovisual fueron retenidos por quienes se encargaron de efectuar la donación. El acervo compuesto por libros, revistas y diarios que perteneció a José Hernández Meyer, fue donado e ingresado en la Biblioteca "Victorino de la Plaza" del Complejo de Bibliotecas y Archivos de Salta. Por otro lado, el Centro Cultural "José Hernández Meyer", de reciente creación y ubicado en la localidad de El Encón, alberga una parte de los archivos sonoros que pertenecieron al donante debido a que los mismos fueron cedidos por el CBAS en Agosto de 2018.
